This month's blog post focuses on Alesha Dixon's song 'The Boy Does Nothing'.

By means of this listening activity learners have to choose the right word, rearrange the sentences in some stanzas, rearrange phrases in paragraphs, and identify, and therefore inflect, the given infinitives in either simple present or simple past.

The images will  hopefully help them get the meaning.The slides should be printed or projected so that the learners doing it can go through the lyrics at least once before they start listening to the song. The lyrics version will allow them to check their exercise. The karaoke version will enable them to improve stress, rhythm, intonation and pronunciation.

This listening  activity is suitable for CEFR B1/B2, or intermediate and upper-intermediate students of English.

'The Boy Does Nothing', by Alesha Dixon sold 1,000.000 copies worldwide. The song was the first single by the British singer  from her new 2008 album. It became a big success not only in Europe, but also in Australia.

As for today's post, these are the activities suggested: 

On one hand learners should fill in the gaps with words according to the image, and, on the other, after listening  carefully to the lyrics, they should correct the given preposition. All prepositions in pink are wrong.

Whereas the filling in the gap activity is suitable for CEFR A1 & A2 students, that is to say, beginners and post-beginners, the second one -correct the prepositions- is intended for CEFR B1 & B2 learners of English or intermediate and upper-intermediate students of English. 

That the learning process is fostered by means of enjoyable activities is no new news. The more a student enjoys an activity, the more he/she learns. If, on top of that, they are based on beautiful songs, the learning process will be fostered without their realizing.

SONG: ¨HAVANA" LISTENING EXERCISE

    By means of this song Camila Cabello pays tribute to the city of Havana, Cuba, where she was born.

    "Havana" is about love, a much common theme in songs, but the story in this song is not only about falling in love with someone from Havana, it is mainly about being in love with a place.

     A song-based listening activity, "Havana" is a resource to practise listening, stress, rhythm and intonation, apart from some grammar aspects and vocabulary. 

    The learners should read the lyrics a couple of times before starting the activity. Then, they should listen or watch the video and follow the instructions on each slide: either to fill in the blanks or choose the right word. However, on slide 5 they will have to rearrange 3 lines in the stanza.

 Phonetics will play a key role in this activity and  the students’ passive  vocabulary will be activated while new vocabulary will be acquired.

 "Havana" Listening Exercise is suitable for A2 (post-beginners), B1 & B2         (pre-intermediate & intermediate) students.

SONG: BIEBER & FONSI's DESPACITO LISTENING EXERCISE

This time on the blog I'm posting the same song, but a different listening exercise intended for CEFR B1&B2 students.

This Bieber and Fonsi's  remix,  among several other versions which were released  DESPACITO    after Fonsi's original song, following the single's success, is probably the most heard, especially in the English-speaking countries.

Even if in most European countries schools are having their summer break, I hope this Despacito presentation can be useful for you all.
In the same way as in the previous Despacito listening exercise, it consists of a listening activity where some tasks are to be carried out going through the bilingual lyrics.
