As Iran is getting ready to celebrate her main festivity, I would like to present this post on Nowruz, the celebration of a Peaceful Culture: the Culture of Hospitality.

A year ago we had the privilege of being invited by our Iranian friends to celebrate Nowruz with them, and it wouldn't be fair just to keep it to myself. 

Therefore, in this presentation I have tried to provide you with some images and some hints about Iran's most important celebration: Nowruz, which means and, in fact it is, their New Year. 

Our Iranian friends opened a  door for us, a new one, and all of a sudden we discovered the beauty of this country and the wonderful people that live in it. 

With heartfelt thanks to all our Iranian friends.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2019

One of the fields of  research not recognized by the Nobel Prize is that of Mathematics.
However, throughout history a few women devoted their careers and most of their life time to the study of mathematics, thus reaching their goals.

 Even if the  under-representation of women in that world is well documented, quite 
 a few faced the many difficulties around them and managed  to obtain a well deserved      success.

 International Women's Day is approaching and I would like to upload this          presentation of a brief, but hopefully insightful, short story  of the most significant    women whose study  shed a light on the field of Mathematical Sciences.

I have excluded from this blogpost Maryam Mirzakhani, the great Iranian  mathematician, not because of her lesser importance, but because she was a unique girl as a student, a brilliant teenager in secondary and upper school and an excellent professor at Harvard University: probably the greatest  mathematician of the las two centuries.

The activities in this presentation are suitable for B1, B2 and C1 students (CEFR), or intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced learners of English.

ST VALENTINE. 2019

Today's blogpost cannot be but related to  St Valentine.

January 26th is Australia Day: the National Day of Australia. 
It commemorates the arrival of the first British ships at Botany Bay or Sydney Cove in 1788. On that day British people entered the country  and  never left it again. Most of the ships carried prisoners who were to live in Australia for the rest of their lives, since the 18th century British rulers did not want to have any convicts in their society.
 However, the first Europeans to arrive in Australia had been the Dutch, who gave the island the first name: New Holland.
Not every Australian citizen or resident agrees with this festivity. In fact, Aborigines prefer to call this day Invasion Day or Survival Day, since that event endangered  their own life and culture.

This month's blog post focuses on Australia Day and is intended for a wide range of learners of English: beginners, post-beginners, and pre-intermediate students, though more advanced ones will hopefully also find it useful. As for CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), this activity is suitable for A1-A2, and even B1 students. 

All the pictures were taken by myself, except the ones depicting Aborigines, in Australia, during the month of August in 2018.

CHRISTMAS MAGICAL CHARACTERS

That #Christmas is one of the most worldwide widespread festivities is no  news,  especially as for the celebrations focused on these three #Magical Characters: #Grand Father Frost & Snegurochka, #Santa Claus, and The #Three Wise Men.

 In most of the  western countries we are familiar with Santa Claus, probably because of the huge influence USA exerts on the rest of the world. However, two of the most deeply rooted traditions in Europe, and from there  spread over to the other continents, are the ones related to The Three Wise Men and Grand Father Frost  and Snegurochka.
This blog post presents the most important facts concerning these three figures:
. their name
. the date of the festivity
. what they look like 
. what they are wearing
. where they come from
In spite of their different origin and their belonging to different cultures, they all share the most important features:
. they know all about you
. they bring presents to the children around Christmas 
. all of them are rooted in tradition.

So, learners of English (beginners, post-beginners and intermediate) can go through this info, which will enable them to establish comparisons between them, or perhaps to write texts describing each one of the characters or  work in pairs asking and answering questions about them. 
As a follow up, finding the similarities in them, in spite of their diverse origin and culture, may be also  an interesting task to do.
