This month‘s blog post stems from a recent
visit to Iran, where Farsi, the official
language, is spoken by over 70 million
people. Besides, Farsi is also an official language in Afghanistan and
Tajikistan.
When the Arabs invaded Persia, in around
600 AD, ‘Farsi’ was the Arabic name for Persia, and they also called ‘Farsi’ the
language.
The Arabs and the Arabic Language exerted such
a long-lasting influence that the language is still called Farsi in Iran today,
though it may be referred to as Persian elsewhere.
In the same way as the English Language
has borrowed words
from Germanic Languages and Romance Languages, it has also borrowed words from other languages.
Such is the case with Farsi: the English language
has gone outside its own linguistic resources and has borrowed words from Farsi, the language of a great culture and remarkable literature.
So far, I have uploaded presentations
focused on borrowings from Spanish and from Northern European Languages.
On this occasion I would like to present
some of the words the English Language has assimilated from Farsi.
I hope you find this post interesting and useful.
I always appreciate your feedback
