THE FIRST-ROUND-THE-WORLD-TOUR: MAGELLAN & ELCANO EXPEDITION

MAGELLAN & ELCANO EXPEDITION

500 years ago, on September 20th 1519, five vessels set sail to the Moluccas, known as the Spice Islands. 265 brave sailors on board, commanded by the sea-captains Ferdinand Magellan and

Juan Sebastián Elcano had sailed from Seville along the River Guadalquivir, reaching the  mouth of the river at Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Huelva), and then leaving westwards.

Only one ship -Victoria-  led by Elcano with 18 men onboard circumnavigated the world returning to Spain three years later, on September 6th, 1522. The Magellans & Elcano Expedition is one of the greatest feats in the History of Mankind.

This month's blog post is focused on last month of September, when one of the greatest feats in History  started to take place 500 years ago: the circumnavigation of the World.

This TRIVIA (20 questions)  I have devised  challenges the skills of high beginning (CEFR A2 & B1/B2) and intermediate level students as it helps them learn aspects of History in an enjoyable way, in the same way as it helps them learn vocabulary and practise the English Language, mainly by means of reading & listening  skills
I would suggest several ways to go through this game:
1. In small groups, questions  projected, only one question showed at a time: the first group to find out the answer is given a point.
2. In small groups, handout of printed questions: group members work together answering all the questions.
2. In pairs, handouts of printed questions: the first pair to get the answers is the winner
3. Whole class: just the teacher or one able student reads out the questions. Individual students should call out the right answer.
Once the students have answered the questions, you may ask them to write about the story  of the Expedition.
There are many more ways to develop this activity. I am positive you know which one suits best your students.

I do hope you had a great summer, or winter, and also that you find this post useful.
Your feedback is always appreciated.
