BLACK FRIDAY, CYBER MONDAY, GREEN MONDAY

Just a few days before Black Friday, this month's blog post revolves around Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Green Monday, the three big shopping days in the world. Though born in the USA, Black Friday has spread to several countries around the world, such as UK and Spain, where shops are either open in the early morning or kept open till very late in the evening. The success of Black Friday produced  Cyber Monday, and a few years later, Green Monday.
Aimed at A1, A2 & B1(beginners, post-beginners & pre-intermediate)  learners of English, this activity can be worked as a reading exercise followed by either a speaking activity or a writing one.

AN EASY LETTER

This month's blog post consists of writing an easy letter. 
Aimed at A1 & A2   learners of English, or beginners and post beginners, all they have to do is select a country out of the three given ones and, accordingly, choose from the optional items. 
A few minutes' previous brainstorming might help your students relate the images of the countries and sights to the given options. 
Finally, they could be asked to read out/write their complete letter.

10 WORDS FROM FARSI IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This month‘s blog post stems from a recent 
 visit to Iran, where Farsi, the official 

 language, is spoken by over 70 million people. Besides, Farsi is also  an official language in Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

     Farsi or Persian?

  When the Arabs invaded Persia, in around 600 AD, ‘Farsi’ was the   Arabic name for Persia, and they also called ‘Farsi’ the language.

  The Arabs and the Arabic Language exerted such a long-lasting      influence that the language is still called Farsi in Iran today, though  it may be referred to as Persian elsewhere.

 In the same way as the English Language has borrowed words 

 from Germanic Languages and Romance Languages, it has also  borrowed words from other languages.

 Such is the case with Farsi: the English language has gone outside  its own linguistic resources and has borrowed words from Farsi,  the language of a great culture and remarkable literature.

 So far, I have uploaded presentations focused on borrowings from  Spanish and from Northern European Languages.

 On this occasion I would like to present some of the words the  English Language has assimilated from Farsi.

NOTHING' LISTENING EXERCISE 

This month's blog post focuses on Alesha Dixon's song 'The Boy Does Nothing'.

By means of this listening activity learners have to choose the right word, rearrange the sentences in some stanzas, rearrange phrases in paragraphs, and identify, and therefore inflect, the given infinitives in either simple present or simple past.

The images will  hopefully help them get the meaning.The slides should be printed or projected so that the learners doing it can go through the lyrics at least once before they start listening to the song. The lyrics version will allow them to check their exercise. The karaoke version will enable them to improve stress, rhythm, intonation and pronunciation.

This listening  activity is suitable for CEFR B1/B2, or intermediate and upper-intermediate students of English.

'The Boy Does Nothing', by Alesha Dixon sold 1,000.000 copies worldwide. The song was the first single by the British singer  from her new 2008 album. It became a big success not only in Europe, but also in Australia.
