BLACK FRIDAY (2019)

blackfriday#englishlearning#EFL#teachingresource#cybermonday#greenmonday#english

Black Friday, originally held on just one day, has become in most of the countries a longer period of time and, sometimes, lasts one week.
Since we are within this week, perhaps you would like to read about it.

BARBARA ELUM-BALDRES & THE LAST CZARS

#costumedesigner#filmindustry

#lastczars#lasttsars#efl

Few people remain seated at the end of a film to read all the lines of the credits.
However, if you do, you will soon realize you need quite a few minutes  - such is the number of people involved in the making of a film.
Among the credits, there is one
which has always caught my attention, and this is the one referring to the costume designer.
There is no way we can imagine a film successful without the skillful art and deep knowledge of a costume designer.

In this month's blog post I would like you to read about Bárbara Elum-Baldrés, a young, and already successful costume designer, whose brilliant career has just started.

In this presentation you can read:
Bárbara´s biography  (slides 2,3,4)
Netflix Interview -only the answers- (slides 5,6,7,8,9)
Questions provided in the presentation (slides 10, 11, 12)
The task in this blog post consists of relating the questions to the interview texts.
There are 10 questions (A,B,C,D,E,F,GH,I,J) and  only 8 interview answers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).
Some of the questions may be related to the same text.
This comprehension activity is suitable for Intermediate and upper-intermediate learners of English, that is to say, CEFR B1 and B2.

I do hope you find it interesting and useful.

THE FIRST-ROUND-THE-WORLD-TOUR: MAGELLAN & ELCANO EXPEDITION

                                                                                                                                                                       Replica of the vessel     Victoria.

MAGELLAN & ELCANO EXPEDITION

500 years ago, on September 20th 1519, five vessels set sail to the Moluccas, known as the Spice Islands. 265 brave sailors on board, commanded by the sea-captains Ferdinand Magellan and

Juan Sebastián Elcano had sailed from Seville along the River Guadalquivir, reaching the  mouth of the river at Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Huelva), and then leaving westwards.

Only one ship -Victoria-  led by Elcano with 18 men onboard circumnavigated the world returning to Spain three years later, on September 6th, 1522. The Magellans & Elcano Expedition is one of the greatest feats in the History of Mankind.

This month's blog post is focused on last month of September, when one of the greatest feats in History  started to take place 500 years ago: the circumnavigation of the World.

This TRIVIA (20 questions)  I have devised  challenges the skills of high beginning (CEFR A2 & B1/B2) and intermediate level students as it helps them learn aspects of History in an enjoyable way, in the same way as it helps them learn vocabulary and practise the English Language, mainly by means of reading & listening  skills
I would suggest several ways to go through this game:
1. In small groups, questions  projected, only one question showed at a time: the first group to find out the answer is given a point.
2. In small groups, handout of printed questions: group members work together answering all the questions.
2. In pairs, handouts of printed questions: the first pair to get the answers is the winner
3. Whole class: just the teacher or one able student reads out the questions. Individual students should call out the right answer.
Once the students have answered the questions, you may ask them to write about the story  of the Expedition.
There are many more ways to develop this activity. I am positive you know which one suits best your students.

I do hope you had a great summer, or winter, and also that you find this post useful.
Your feedback is always appreciated.

10 RUSSIAN WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This month’s blog post, further on the borrowings
-words that coming from other languages have shaped the English Language-, focuses on some Russian words   which the English Language has assimilated.
It is a fact that the English language has gone outside its own linguistic resources and has borrowed words from  other languages, which have all shaped the English Language
The English Language vocabulary includes borrowings from many other languages, such as the *Spanish Language, the **Northern European Languages, and even the language of some geographically distant countries, such as ***Iran.
Russian, the language of the Tsars’ Empire, the former Soviet Union, and present day Russia, is one of them.

Russian, the largest native language in Europe is also the second most widespread language on the Internet, after English.

This presentation includes vocabulary exercises suitable for A1&A2 learners of English (slides 1 & 2), and exercises for B1/B2 students (slides 3 & 4); that is to say, for beginners, post-beginners, and intermediate students of English.

Thank you so much for your feedback. It is always appreciated.

I do hope you find this presentation useful.
